Lawnmower Boy

My seven year old, Mr. L’s, fondest desire came true today. He got to drive our lawnmower all by himself. He has loved riding with his dad since he was about two. We would stick him on the mower in front of my husband and he would ride along, helping his daddy steer, grinning a huge grin, having the time of his life. Since my oldest son has begun mowing regularly, Mr. L has longed to be able to mow as well. We recently got our older Craftsman mower fixed so my husband decided that today was the day. Mr L. had the time of his life! He mowed along, grinning and waving at me every time he looked up and saw me. Now, I feel I should point a few things out: 1) my husband was walking alongside him the entire time, 2) the mower was never put in a gear higher than one (which means it was going REALLY slow), and 3) the mower deck was never engaged. But as far as Mr. L was concerned, it was great! I have a feeling he is going to want to wear his screen printed tee shirt that has a John Deere tractor on it, ALL the time now because ever since this afternoon, all he has been able to talk about was how he got to drive ‘the tractor’!

The things I do for my Art

I’m in a photography group on Facebook where we have weekly themes and then at the end of the week we vote on which photos we liked the best for that week. There aren’t any prizes or anything like that, the point of the group is to get feedback on your photos and read the feedback that others get in order to learn how to be a better photographer. This week’s theme is beverages/drinks. It can be whatever we feel represents that topic. I have entered a photo every week so far, even on weeks that I really didn’t think I was going to be able to come up with something to enter, but this week, I really thought I wasn’t going to be able to come up with anything. My mind was a blank. Every meager idea that popped in my head seemed either too cheesy, or I didn’t have the proper equipment (or time) to pull it off effectively. Then I was sitting at my computer tonight and it dawned on me that it is a beautiful night tonight. Cool temps, no wind, full moon, and a few clouds that create a neat effect without dimming the light of the moon. So I set up a TV tray with a placemat on it outside and placed a Coca-Cola glass half full of water on the tray. Then I shot the glass from below with the moon shining on it and through it. I’m pleased with the results, so we’ll have to see what the other members of the group have to say. The only problem is that every time I go outside to shoot night shots in the summer, I forget one VERY important thing – mosquitoes. I got eaten alive out there! I can’t believe I forgot the skeeters AGAIN! I did the same thing all last summer when I was shooting night shots of our flowers. I need a lightweight jacket to wear while shooting summer night shots to hopefully keep the mosquitoes at bay. It probably wouldn’t hurt to make it an embroidered jacket that says “I’m an idiot” just so I remember that I need to wear it!

Very Good Television

by admin on August 26, 2010

** Check out Broken Arrow today for a quote on screen printing for your team or group apparel. **

“Goodnight, Mama!”

“Goodnight, Mary Ellen!”

“Goodnight, Jim-Bob!”

“Goodnight, John-boy!”

Ahhhh, the Waltons. You’ve just gotta love them. I know I do. I grew up watching the reruns on TV everyday. My mom made a rule one summer that we could only watch two hours of TV a day. My sister and I being the good kids that we were, we stuck to it, and one of those hours was always The Waltons. We both adored them. I could (and can) name all seven Walton children forwards and backwards. I’m telling you, they just don’t make TV like that anymore; good, wholesome, family television that the whole family can watch together and you don’t have to worry about sexual innuendo, cuss words, crass humor, or gore and violence.

You want to know the wonderful, beautiful thing about the advent of the digital age that makes my soul sing? I now own all nine, yes count them – nine, seasons of the Waltons, plus the set of six TV movies that were made after the series had been cancelled, on DVD. Now I can watch them whenever I need a John-boy fix, there is nothing on TV, or I feel my kids need a reminder that there once was a simpler time when people worked hard, put in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, and kids had to use their imaginations to occupy themselves rather than the latest Nintendo DS game. I think I’m going to have a screen printed t-shirt made that says, “I ‘heart’ The Waltons”! That wouldn’t embarrass my husband or kids. Nope not at all…

On the Lake Front

We’ve got water in our basement again. It’s very frustrating. We own an old farmhouse and it seems that if it’s not one thing, it’s another with this place. Two years ago, we had to replace the electrical board on our furnace TWICE because of our basement flooding. My husband has made some improvements that keep it from flooding as badly as it used to, but when you get about three or four inches of rain in the space of an hour or so, like we did last night, that stinkin’ basement still floods. At least it doesn’t flood as bad or as often as it used to because I was about ready to rename our home ‘The Lake House”.  When we first moved in this house, we stored a bunch of our stuff down in the basement. And by stuff, I mean useless junk. Anyway, the first time it flooded, we didn’t know it would do that and didn’t even realize it had started flooding to the water was about a foot deep. We took that one in stride and decided to accept the fact that it was nature’s way of forcing us to get rid of the useless junk (it had all been ruined by the flood). Luckily we didn’t lose anything of real value except my husband’s embroidered sweatshirt from his soccer team in high school, and that value was only sentimental. The second time it flooded so bad, we thought we had fixed the problem, but since we were fresh out of useless junk, the basement looked like a ghost town. The only thing of value was the furnace and water heater. Unfortunately, we were wrong and had only fixed part of the problem. The furnace took a hit for the second time, which lit a fire under my husband’s behind to make some more improvements. Now once the basement dries out again, we can fix the rest of the issues. I’ve always that lake front property would be nice, but this is just ridiculous.
